We were both born in England and spent all of our working lives there.
In 2007 we moved to Cyprus, a lovely island in the Mediterranean.
There were many reasons for leaving the UK including the open immigration policy, high taxes, rising crime, cold winters and a rising population causing stress on all services. Looking back now in 2025 we do not regret this decision.
Well, we are getting older now and looking into the future when we need care, there are no nice care homes in Cyprus nor easy and affordable help and care in your own home.
The culture in Cyprus is all about the family. The family units generally stay together and they have a duty to take care of their elders. They do not have a need for care homes.
Also, Cyprus is a small island and we have explored and pretty much seen all there is to see and do. Too easy to sit and do nothing.
The winters while not as cold and wet as the UK are pretty cold relative to the 30+ degrees in the summers and as you get older you feel the cold so much more making you vulnerable health wise.
1. The people are lovely, it is the Land of Smiles.
2. Warm weather ALL year long.
3. Lower cost of living.
4. Happy and safe in most of the country.
5. High quality medical care.
6. Lovely pool villas and condos at affordable prices to buy or rent.
7. Great shopping opportunities.
8. Last but not least - a new vision in retirement homes, started by an Englishman, Andrew Stocks, a few years ago has become very popular, with all the facilities you could ask for including 24/7 nurses on site, and further care in your own home when you need it.
I will explain more in the "Where" menu.
